The war heritage of Iraq came under attack itself, when an insurgents' rocket destroyed part of Baghdad's iconic Monument to the Unknown Soldier museum.
The site of colossal works, including a giant sculpture of two hands holding steel swords, an expansive parade ground and monuments to the fallen in the Iran/Iraq war, was built as a grandiose celebration of Saddam Hussein's rule.
Despite its associations with the deposed regime, the Baghdad government was forced to abandon efforts to remove 2,500 Iranian helmets from the base of the swords last year.[...]
